Japan News Release

9 December 2013

Japan Supports  Education and Healthcare in Central Uganda through the Grant of USD 123,000

Today, the Embassy of Japan is to hand over a project of JPY 9.963 million (approximately US$ 123,000) for procurement of 2 vehicles through Missionaries of the Poor (MOP) in Kampala.

H.E. Junzo Fujita, the Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, will officiate the commissioning of the project.

Established in 2000, MOP is a home for more than 400 homeless men, women and children who are either mentally or physically challenged, HIV/AIDS affected or refugees. MOP also provides free medical care for more than 50 vulnerable and destitute people every day, and offers education access to over 800 children and youths. Due to the limited means of transportation, the patients in need of urgent treatments or operations have difficulties in accessing near hospitals, and disabled children are unable to go to school. An ambulance and a utility bus have been procured through this grant to improve access for the patients and vulnerable children.

The donation by Japan is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Embassy of Japanese to support community development projects to uplift the life of people at the grassroots level. So far in Uganda, total of 177 projects have been funded under the GGP scheme since its initiation in 1992.

Japan, steadily promoting the ownership of and the partnership with African countries through the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting quality growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidating peace and good governance in Africa.
